Resuming our services – step by step

You could already read it in a press release of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz and in the media: Libraries gradually resume their services.

In this article we outline which services the Staatsbibliothek can currently make available to readers, and what steps are planned in the near future. As soon as we change something, we will update this article and also Keep you informed via our other news channels.

Working in the reading rooms

Currently, it is not yet possible to work or study in our reading rooms.

Returning borrowed items

The return of items on site is possible again, even without an appointment. Currently you will not receive a return receipt and the update of your library account will take some time.

Please return as soon as possible items which have been reserved by other readers.

It is still possible to use postal services for returning books, the address is: Leihstelle der Staatsbibliothek, Potsdamer Str. 33, 10785 Berlin.

Booking a time slot for picking up items

All the following services, which we offer again on site, are only possible after the booking of a time slot, as we are obliged by law to prevent any queues. We ask for your understanding that we have to limit access in this way. We currently assign half-hour appointments for a limited number of persons between 9am and 6pm. The booking can be done done via our website.

Time spent in the building

The time spent on our facilities should be kept as short as possible, observing the rules of hygiene and distance. Use of the research PCs in the entrance hall is currently not possible for reasons of hygiene.

Borrowing of items

Collection of items requested before the closure

All items which you requested before the closure in March, but which you have not yet collected, can be collected until 22 May 2020 and will then be returned to the stacks.

In case you already know which material you do not need any more, please send an e-mail to ausleihe@sbb.spk-berlin.de.

Books in the pick-up area in the reading room

Some items which you have placed in the pick-up area in the reading room can be rebooked and taken home. Whether or not this is possible, depends on different factors such as the age and state of the respective item and has to be decided individually for each item.

We would like to send back to the stacks those items which you do not need any more. If you want to rebook or return an item please contact us either via ausleihe@sbb.spk-berlin.de or our contact form.

Borrowing of new items

New requests are possible again. In the beginning readers can only borrow items which are allowed to be taken out of the library  and the loan is limited to 5 volumes. Please book a time slot for the collection of your items.

Borrowing of reading room items

As long as the reading rooms are closed, it may be possible to borrow individual books from our general reading rooms from both sites. The loan period is 30 days, renewals are not possible. These items cannot be requested online – please order them via digiservice@sbb.spk-berlin.de, inidcating your full name and your library card number.  Unfortunately, Multi-volume works, periodicals, loose-leaf collections, legal texts and legal commentaries can not be borrowed.

Extension of loan periods

As of now please use the online possibility to extend the loan period for your borrowed items. Should an online renewal no longer be possible, please send a note to ausleihe@sbb.spk-berlin.de. We will then check if a renewal is still feasible.

Validity of the library card

We offer an extension of the validity of your library card via the renewal form on our Website. Registration via our simplified online registration StabiOnline can only be renewed in person on site.

New registration – furthermore only online

You can furthermore register online in a simplified registration procedure to use our electronic resources. For this, we require you to have an officially registered residence in Germany and to send a scan or photos of your personal documents. This offer exists until 30 June 2020 and is valid for one month from the date of application. You will find all details on our registration page. If you would like to borrow items, please come to the library once you have registered online and identify yourself there again with your personal documents.

Charges and fines

Already existing overdue fines can be payed by transfer. From 4 May 2020 you can also use the automatic pay machines in the library again – after booking an time slot in advance.

Permanent lockers and carrels

If you wish to remove items from your permanent lockers or cabins, please book a time slot.

Interlibrary loan

The regulations for borrowing items of the Staatsbibliothek also apply to interlibrary loan items that have already been made available or borrowed at home.

As of now, the regular interlibrary loan service is available again via our interlibrary loan form and also via the online interlibrary loan service in the Union Catalogue of the Common Library Network (GVK). In addition to copies, books can again be ordered via interlibrary loan for lending outside the library. Please note that there may still be delays and restrictions (e.g. foreign countries, historical holdings (pre-1955), microforms). Furthermore, items that are only intended for the reading room cannot be made available at the moment. The interlibrary loan fee will therefore continue to be suspended until 31th of May 2020.

You can also order copies of journal articles from journals and partial copies of books via Subito. Please note that according to current copyright law we are only allowed to supply a maximum of 10% of a work or individual contributions from anthologies. Other libraries also offer the lending of books via Subito.

Access to e-books and other digital resources

You can of course continue to use our digital service. During the period of usage restrictions, many suppliers and providers of electronic resources provide additional content at no additional cost, which we have compiled in a continuously updated overview.

Events / Workshops / Consultations

Events, workshops, training sessions, and consultations can still not take place. We offer our new format SchreibZeit online on Twitter and once a week as a web conference. For the time being, the Beethoven exhibition at our site Haus Unter den Linden has also been closed. For this exhibition we would like to recommend our Virtual Exhibition.
