Ms. Leiden Or. 6980, an item of the Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje collection, is a remarkable manuscript from several points of view. It was brought to the University Library of Leiden in 1936. Its paper, a product from the well-known Galvani mills in Friuli (Italy), has not previously been recorded, but nonetheless defines a terminus a quo for its production. The text of Or. 6980 is equally interesting. It lists the texts of 133 sung poems, each with the name of a singer and some musical instruments, all of it in a document which was produced before 1936. Some of these poems can be connected to an exceptional collection of songs recorded on wax cylinders commissioned by C. Snouck Hurgronje. But it is the text edition of ms. Or. 6980 that reveals the many mutations of these texts since their origin.
