Current information on the closure of the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin

Until further notice, the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin will remain closed for the public. On this page we will regularly inform you about further developments and the services which we will be able to offer during the closure period.

In order to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus, the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (SPK) (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation) – the Staatsbibliothek is part of it – has decided, until further notice, to close all their buildings for the public. Staff has been reduced to an absolute minimum. This is meant to protect visitors and staff members from possible infection.

For the time being, we have made the following arrangements for the users of the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin:

Questions and current information

You can contact us

  • by phone from Monday to Friday between 10 am and 4 pm on +49 30 266 433888
  • via our information portal

Validity of the library card

We have extended the validity of your library cards by 50 days in order to enable you to use our electronic services during the closure period.

If your library card has already expired, please send us the number of your library card via our information portal. Usually we can reactivate your membership. For organisational reasons, it is currently not possible to renew your membership using the form offered so far.

New registration

From now on, you can register online in a simplified, electronic admission procedure to use our electronic resources. This offer is valid until 30 April 2020. You will find all details on our registration page (so far only in german).

Overdue fines

Already existing overdue fines can be payed by transfer: (https://staatsbibliothek-berlin.de/en/service/details-on-service-and-use/loan-period-renewals-and-overdue-fines/#tab3) Please note that payments cannot yet be credited to your library account. If you only want to pay fees after the closing time, there are no disadvantages.

Borrowed items – Renewals and Reminders

You need not renew items which you have already borrowed. You will neither receive information on the end of the loan period nor any reminders.

Borrowed items with reservation

There are no overdue fines for items already reserved by other users. Please return these media as soon as possible when the library reopens.

Borrowed items – returns

Please keep the borrowed books until the library reopens. A return at this time is completely sufficient.

If you absolutely wish to return borrowed items now, please use the postal service (Address: Leihstelle der Staatsbibliothek, Potsdamer Str. 33, 10785 Berlin).

Itemes in the Book collection area or Reading room hold shelf

All media that you have ordered but have not yet picked up, as well as all volumes that you have in the Reading room hold shelf, will remain on the shelves for you until the library is reopened and can then be picked up or used again.

Order media or make a reservation

Books can neither be ordered nor reserved at the moment. Please use our online offers during the closing time.

Reviews in the stacks

Since we have minimized our internal operations as much as possible, it is unfortunately not possible to carry out checks in our stacks. Please contact us again after the library has reopened with your request and we will check it as soon as possible.

Interlibrary loan

Interlibrary loan operations have largely ceased throughout Germany. Therefore, no interlibrary loan orders can be placed in the State Library at the moment. However, individual libraries still deliver via Subito.

Interlibrary loan volumes that have already been made available or borrowed for home use are subject to the same regulations as volumes of the Staatsbibliothek.

Interlibrary loan requests from other libraries

We are currently unable to process orders via interlibrary loan and document delivery (Subito), nor can we process enquiries. Interlibrary loans from the Staatsbibliothek (1/1a) are currently not reminded or recalled and no extra requests for renewals have to be made. We will also be generous with volumes that have been made available but not yet borrowed.

Digitization orders

Currently, it is not possible to place a digitization order with our DigiService.

Permanent lockers and carrels

Unfortunately, it is currently impossible to give you any access to your permanent lockers or carrels.

Events / Trainings / Consultations

Besides the closure of the building we also have to cancel all planned events, trainings and consultations until further notice. For the time being, the Beethoven exhibition at our site Haus Unter den Linden has also been closed. For this exhibition we would like to recommend our Virtual Exhibition.
